Theme verse: 1 Samuel 2:18
Pray that the people of Roodewal will be healed and restored so that they can take the message of Jesus' hope to touch other nations. Luke 1:17 ". . . to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap: He seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. (1 Samuel 2:8)
Kibbutz El-Shammah is committed to serving the Roodewal community with every domain of society in order to see healing and restoration, purpose, and dignity restored.
Kibbutz El-Shammah has developed from an area of wasteland to a collaborative organization addressing the situation of Roodewal head-on. The property provides housing for the workers and consists of a hall, offices, a kitchen, pre-school, training departments and shops.
Kibbutz El-Shammah is situated in Roodewal Worcester, South Africa. It is part of an ongoing project which has its origins in the New Life Gang Project which was started in 1983. Roodewal has been virtually destroyed through gang warfare. The Cape Town Scorpions (CTS) had their headquarters in Roodewal and clashed with the Born Free Kids (BFK.) The CTS has no entry to BFK turf, which included all of the high schools and primary schools (except Roodewal Primary School), clinics, cinema, sport fields, swimming pool, and hotels. Over the years, Roodewal became deeply impoverished due to lack of education, proper health care, social upliftment, and general recreation. Fifty percent of all crimes in the Worcester area were reported to have occurred in Roodewal, which consisted of only fifteen percent of Worcester's population of 133,000.
After a four-year project, peace was attained in the community, but scars remained. Ex-gangsters and drug lords were now unemployed, families were devastated, and the suburbs lay in ruins. Kibbutz El-Shammah means "the manifestation of God's presence." It was birthed as an oasis to a hurting community with the belief that Roodewal will be restored and uplifted from the ash heap into dignity and destiny.
